My Design Philosophy
Perception is reality, experiences alter how we view our environment.
-
Everyone views their environment differently, perception is based on experiences which influences what we attend to.
-
These differences in perception are why I believe it is important to design learning that employs cognitive and developmental theory to consider the best approach for the learner.
-
Instruction should be designed in a way that recognizes the instructor and technology are enhancements to the instructional material.
Considering the Learner
The learner should be considered holistically. Please view the following interactive presentation to learn more about the learner's role in the design process.
Media in Design
"Media are mere vehicles that deliver instruction but do not influence student achievement any more than the truck that delivers our groceries causes changes in our nutrition" -Richard Clark
There are two competing theorists governing media use in instructional design: Clark and Kozma.
-
Clark believes that media enhances instruction, but does not have a significant impact on the learner.
-
Kozma believes that media is an integral component, greatly altering overall outcomes in training.
Given my background in psychology and learner-centric design philosophy, I tend to lean more towards Clark's theory. I believe that media enhances, but does not alter the overall training transfer in properly designed instruction.
